Arusha
National Park
Arusha National Park, tucked away in northeastern Tanzania, is an impressive blend of distinct terrains and diverse wildlife.
Spanning approximately 552 square kilometres, this park boasts three predominant features: the verdant slopes of Mount Meru, the Momela Lakes, and the lush Ngurdoto Crater. Home to various fauna, from colourful birds to large mammals, it is a sanctuary for Tanzania’s rich biodiversity.
On the alpine trails of Mount Meru, one may encounter giraffes, buffalos, and zebras peacefully grazing while elusive leopards and hyenas lurk in the shadows. The park’s varied elevation and vegetation support unique ecosystems, making it an enticing destination for wildlife enthusiasts. Its trails are often dotted with colobus monkeys and the rare, elusive dik-dik, a small antelope endemic to East Africa.
The Momela Lakes, with their varying alkaline levels, host many bird species, including flamboyant flamingos and majestic eagles. At Ngurdoto Crater, visitors can spot herds of buffalo, warthogs, and sometimes elephants against the backdrop of the marshy crater floor. Despite being one of Tanzania’s smaller parks, Arusha’s breathtaking landscapes and vibrant ecosystems make it a wildlife haven worth exploring.
